There was once a woman who prayed every day for 20 years that she'd win the lottery. Every single day. Finally, in despair, she said, "God, I've been a true and faithful servant and have lived an exemplary life. Why won't you grant me this one thing?" "Look," said God, "at least meet me half way -- and buy a lottery ticket."

I think the worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades...or a game of fake heart attack".

"Used to be that my true love brought me chocolate. Now my true love IS chocolate."

"Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. If you're alive, it isn't".

"A stupid man's report of what a clever man says is never accurate because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand".

- Homer Simpson

"English - Who needs that? I'm never going to England".

- Wayne Gretzky

"100% of the shots you don't take don't go in".

Reaching a goal is like playing a game of chess

Reaching a goal in life is like striving to win in a game of chess. You have your goals set, they both require logical strategy, and every choice you make has a consequence. Setting goals and playing chess are not much different at all.

In life you have your goal set. You have all the tools you need to make it happen, if not at the start you'll get them along the way. As you set out to accomplish it, things can get in your way. It could be anything such as not getting into a specific college or someone not calling you back after a job interview. But you know in your heart that you want to accomplish this goal and you will work with or around these obstacles to make it happen. Much is the same with a game of chess. Your goal is to checkmate the king. You have your army and all you need to do is find the best strategy in order to conquer the game. Naturally, like life, the other army is going to do everything they can to prevent you from attacking their king, not to mention their goal is to get your king as well. You need to protect your king long enough in order to be able to reach your goal of conquering theirs.

In both, you just can't go out into the blind and expect everything will fall into place. You have to do some planning on your part too. No college will just let you walk in through their doors. You have to study and work hard and build a good reputation for yourself. In chess, the opposing army will not make way and let you attack the king, it is something you have to do for yourself. You have to have a plan, a map, or strategy to accomplish your task. You must make logical decisions, and everyone knows that there are always consequences to your choices.

In chess, you should know that every move you make is going to affect the game significantly. Every move, piece, and choice counts; and it will affect the reaction of the opposing team. Whatever choices you make, they are going to react to them accordingly and do what they can to stop you. I don't mean that in life, someone is deliberately trying to stop you, but one must understand that every choice someone makes really does have a reaction and it will affect how the world responds to you, it will affect the opportunities that come to you, and the perception people will have toward you.

Next time you play chess or set a goal, thing about what you really want. Have a plan or strategy that will open doors to reaching this goal. It is very likely you will encounter obstacles or even make mistakes along the way, but do not get disheartened. Everything that happens to you should be taken with a positive attitude. Make sure you make choices with consequences you can live with, and whatever comes your way, work with it to your advantage. In chess and life, the journey is half the fun, so keep going and never give up, you'll be glad that you didn't.
